    Hey guys,

I hope this post doesn't sound weird, but I have always wondered about Stephen Kellogg's life. I love knowing the story behind songs and where he was at in his life when he wrote them. While the anthology was interesting, it obviously couldn't explain everything. Considering I doubt he'll release an autobiography, I decided to enlist the help of this board to put together a cohesive story. Primarily I'm interested in his relationship with his wife.

1993 states pretty clearly that he fell in love in 1993. Satisfied Man states he fell in love with the love of his life (presumably the same person) when he was 16. That would mean he is about 34 now...which sounds reasonable. In 1993, it says they got married and had their first daughter a year later. Considering Sophia is pretty young, I'm assuming they got married well after 1993. Herein lies my interest.

Did they date for that time? Is he married and divorced (Hearts in Pain)? I realize lots of his songs are not about himself, but it's hard to now which ones. I just wonder about songs like 4th Street Moon and others.

Anyone else ever try to piece together his story through song lyrics? I don't mean to sound strange, I have just always wondered about his life. He is such an idol of mine.

I don't think this is weird at all...

i don't know if they dated during that time...he would have to answer that one ;)

but he is still married. and now he has three daughters, hence the new song Noelle, Noelle on the new record.

i always try to piece together his life haha...always.

So if this is weird, I am weird too because I have wondered a lot.

There are certain songs I have wondered about. "Hearts in Pain" is one of them. The biggest thing that confuses me is "A," which I have kind of figured out that his mom had Amy when she was 16 and later met SK's dad and had more kids with him. In "Satisfied Man" and "A" he talks about his dad leaving/not being there for him, but then there is "My Old Man" which is the total opposite from those songs.

I know there are a lot more I have wondered about but those are the first ones to come to mind.

I've heard SK say that he writes songs about his friends' and family's lives too. "Do" is a story about Boots. Pedal Steel is about his grandfather, as we know. It's been awhile since I thumbed through the song book, but I wouldn't assume that every song is about Stephen's life.

I also know that "Blue Jean" and "Mabeline" are about his uncle.

I think I remember him saying Hearts In Pains is about his parents.
My Old Man I think he said was about the guys dads as a collective.
As for 1993, things were probably just shifted around for the sake of it being a song.

In "Satisfied Man" and "A" he talks about his dad leaving/not being there for him, but then there is "My Old Man" which is the total opposite from those songs.

In my opinion, when parents divorce and one leaves, it's hard for a kid to realize that their not the one being left, but that doesn't mean that the parent and kids don't stay close.

i don't think it's weird either - i wonder the same thing - where does his inspiration come from? i think it's natural to wonder about a musician's life - you're let in to so much when you just listen to the music. i agree that not all the songs are actually about him.

i wondered about the 1993 lyric that sounds like they had a kid after being married for one year - i do get the impression that him and his wife have been together since they were teenagers. i think a lot of the love he has there inspires his music in a different way than most. it also makes me happier to hear albums that aren't song after song about breakup after breakup.

it all makes me think that he will (hopefully) not stop writing music ever!

@laur: I didn't mean to imply that I assumed all of his songs were about him. I realize lots are about others (i.e. My Sweet Charade). I am just interested in determining which are from his life and how they fit together.

@maggie: The strange thing I've found is that SK has so few straight out love songs. My girlfriend and I have always wanted an SK song for our wedding song, but when you look for them, few stand out as obvious (such as Diamond). I think this is part of what makes his music so great. It isn't one-dimensional. The love songs he does make, like Such a Way, he adds depth and layers to that make them more than just a sappy story. I can't stand break-up albums just as much as 100% love albums!

My rough hypothesis (bear with me):

He met the love of his life when he was young (Who We Are, Who We'll Become) and finally got together with her when he was 15 (Girlfriend as Pretty as You) or 16 (Satisfied Man, 1993). They broke up at some point during school as he was starting his music career (4th of July). It was during this time that he struggled with depression as his music career was starting and he was living in a cabin (Cabin in the Woods, 4th of July). His music career began to push others away (Scorpio) as he fought his way through (Glassjaw Boxer). At some point during this time, he got back together with the love of his life, got married in 2004 (1993) and had their first child, Sophia, in 2005 (Satisfied Man, Sweet Sophia, Watch You Grow). They then had Adeline and Noelle. (Oh Adeline, Noelle, Noelle).

Does this sound way off? I always toy around with it in my head as I listen to his different albums. I figured I could throw it out there and use it as a basis for others to modify or add to.

The more I think about it though, the lyrics to 1993 might not be purely factual considering a song like 4th Street Moon ("That child is the ring you never had" implies they had a kid before they were married).

This is all one big puzzle...
