I've looked around, maybe not enough, but where can I find lyrics to 'Amy?'

From an earlier post from Addieee...
Caught in the middle
of a teenage love affair
kids get it the worst you know
she was sixteen her parents
couldn’t take her anywhere,
she’d already started to show
cause she had Amy inside of her
Amy you’ve got to let it go
You think she didn’t want you
But how could that be soThe daughter let her hair down
Just like her momma did
The couple didn’t stand a chance
Anything and everything
and looking out for God forbid
but man could the girl danceand it was a family
and a family last time I checked
is a group of people
who give you love when you least expectso the parents split up
just like the whole grand canyon
and the story unfolds some more
you can’t please you mother
and your father wasn’t there for you
and now the brother you adore is singing
Amy you used to carry me underneath your arms
And maybe you’re little brother knows
That you can’t cover up the scarsAnd it had nothing to do with you
And it had nothing to do with me
And it had nothing to do with love
And maybe that’s the craziest thing in the
Whole biography
Aw yeaSo the feelings got buried
Lit a fuse to the bomb
And the daughter got far away
She always was a fighter
With an agony inside her
You can hear it when her daughter says
Mommy, why are you so angry
And it’s time that you stop blaming me
And everybody else
Maybe someday you’ll forgive yourselfAnd the family
and a family the last time I checked
is a group of people
who give you love when you least expectFor this heart that we cannot protect
For this heart that we cannot protect
For this heart that we cannot protect

What a beautiful song!
I should probably start a new thread for this, but I'm scared. Does anyone know the lyrics to Bees? That has to be one of the top 5 SK songs ever written.
"A man's gotta do what he's gotta do, even if the man in question doesn't have a clue!"

I *love* Bees and have asked SK to resurrect it. I could type them up if they don't exist in written form.
Also, re: Amy -- it is a beautiful song but there are too many pronouns and not enough antecedents. It was really helpful to see it written down. Lots of generations to sort out.

Yeah, I agree about the generations. Speaking of which, has anyone ever listened to Grandma Jean's book Carrying the Banner? I haven't but I've thought about ordering it. Reviews might be helpful.

ok I guess I am really dense... but is there 3 generations in the song? That's how I took it but I have a knack for misinterpreting things.

Is bees on an album? I found "Be" - is that what you are talking about?

Relative to Amy's perspective in the song...Keep in mind, this is an interpretation, and I could be way off...but here goes...
Amy was the one who was caught in a teenage love affair, since her mother became pregnant young. The line "the daughter let her hair down, just like her momma did, the couple didn't stand a chance" refers to Amy's grandmother, and her mother and father.
The lines "so the parents split up like the whole grand canyon and the story unfolds some more you can’t please you mother and your father wasn’t there for you and now the brother you adore is singing 'Amy you used to carry me underneath your arms'" is about Amy's parents divorcing and Stephen (the little brother).
Then, the part about "She always was a fighter with an agony inside her You can hear it when her daughter says, 'Mommy, why are you so angry?'" is about Amy and her daughter.
Marissa's generation tally: 4 (Amy's grandmother, mother, Amy, and daughter are all mentioned)

I agree that we've got 4 generations. I would say that SK/Amy's mom was the one "caught in the middle of the teenage love affair," because it sounds weird to say a baby is caught in a love affair.
I am somewhat unclear on who the second verse refers to ("The daughter let her hair down...the couple didn't stand a chance") but my best guess is it's again Amy/SK's mom since that couple falls apart in the next verse.
Back on the other note, "Bees" is not the same as "Be." It was played at a few shows in 05 (like this one). It starts, "Well the rules run right but they ain't true, the things people say can be a bit cruel..."

has anyone heard the song adeline yet? i heard he played it at one of his shows and i've been dying to hear it
Posted 4 years ago on May 3, 2008 LINK -
I've got "Bees" at home (I'm at my parents house), and I'll try to type them out tonight or tomorrow...or I'll just post the song and let someone else give a try.
I love this post... analyzing song lyrics is my favorite. I don't really have anything to add, since all of you seemed to have covered it pretty well....besides that it is a GREAT song. Love it.

Bees
Well the rules run right but they ain't true
The things people say can be a bit cruel
Like the bees just do what the bees do
The summer couldn't stay so it up and flew
Well the dog loves to fetch, he doesn't have a plan
When a boy grows up he will become a man
But a man's got to do what he's got to do
Even if the man in question doesn't have clueAnd I dividing my time yeah everyday now
And I am thanking my stars that I got this far yeah
And I know it might seem like I think I'm all that
But I wanted you to know before you pass me by
I am not that guyYeah well its a right monsoon cause when it rains it pours
It took a long long time to get to your door
I'm gonna pack my bags and do another tour
Lose a little more of who I was before
Its ok sometimes you gotta let things go
There's only so many people you can really know
And you can't be everything to everyone
But you should never forget where you came fromAnd I dividing my time yeah everyday now
And I am thanking my stars that I got this far yeah
And I know it might seem like I think I figured it out
But I wanted you to know before you pass me by
I am not that guyAnd I dividing my time yeah everyday now
And I am thanking my stars that I got this far yeah
And I know it might seem like I think I figured it out
But I wanted you to know before you pass me by
I am not that guyDoot doo-doo doot....
I am not that guy
Bees
I have it labeled "I am not that Guy" from a long time ago...but its "Bees"~ JenPosted 4 years ago on May 5, 2008 LINK -
i LOVE bees.
it needs to make a comeback ASAP!
thanks for the lyrics, Jen!-elisePosted 4 years ago on May 5, 2008 LINK -
Thanks Jen!! I hope we're bringing back Bees mania!
-- LaurenPosted 4 years ago on May 5, 2008 LINK -
Thanks for the lyrics Jen... and add another for the Bees comeback!
- MaryPosted 4 years ago on May 6, 2008 LINK -
In the version I have, I'm pretty sure it's "biding my time" rather than dividing. Thanks for typing these up.
Posted 4 years ago on May 6, 2008 LINK -
It could very well be "biding my time"....I try, but I am must admit that I am not great as I like to pretend I am at writing out lyrics. I blame my bad hearing on all the shows....

Forgive me if I ask a stupid question, but I've only recently discovered SK and the Sixers, and I was wondering if there's a place I can read some of the band's lyrics other than in the anthology? I've only got the Glassjaw Boxer album so far (bought it at the show in Myrtle Beach, SC), and I was hoping to read some lyrics from other albums to figure out which ones to buy first. I searched the web but haven't come up with much thusfar. Any pointers?

I've only been able to get lyrics to Glassjaw Boxer here since February...

If you have the hard copy of cd, which I assume you do since you said you bought it at the show...the lyrics are in the cd booklet too.

Here's a link: http://www.stephenkellogg.com/discs.html
It's from the old site. You should be able to pull up all the lyrics from the previous cd's off of that. Enjoy!
p.s. I wish they put lyrics up on the new site.

Thanks for the tips, all!! I'm going to study up on lyrics and figure out which CDs to buy first...I want to be well-versed in Sixers music before I go see them again in Roanoke!

kickstarted - you didn't ask for it, but I'm going to offer it anyways...
For a new fan, this is the order I would suggest: Glassjaw Boxer/Self-titled/Lucky 11/Bulletproof Heart/One Night in Brooklyn & DVD/South Of Stephen
But in all honesty, my opinion doesn't matter because they are all great. Just wanted to offer the tip.
~ JenPosted 4 years ago on May 17, 2008 LINK -
I definitely think South of Stephen or Lucky 11 needs to be your next buy. I absolutely love the down-to-earth song writing on them. I am also a big fan of Buffalo, but that's not in print anymore I don't believe. If you can get a hold of The Early Hits anywhere it has a good mixed of Buffalo, Rain Summer and some of the other early stuff (obviously).

I'm kind of a fan of listening to them in chronological order...I think it's a symptom of OCD!
Posted 3 years ago on June 13, 2008 LINK -
i suggest lucky 11 or the self-titled album next!
parks is back!
