your best bet is to register and check out http://taperssection.com The band does not allow soundboard patches, so you'll need to have microphones and such. I could recommend a few things, if I knew your budget. Good luck!

I don't know a whole about taping either, but I'd recommend contacting the venues you want to tape at... they can probably give you advice and tell you what sort of equipment is compatible with their soundboard and sound systems, etc...

I am not a taper, but I thought I'd chime in. I'd suggest that you email some tapers for suggestions; their addresses are usually on the info for shows listed at archive.org. They seem to be generally very nice people. And, as it seems that there are few people who tape in Chicago, they'd probably be willing to help you out.
Also, Claude has some info at tapergeek.com, and I found some guides to taping with a simple google search (like here).

Good luck!

I'm wanting to learn how to tape shows! Wondering what's all involved in doing this; good equipment to buy, software, best places to tape, and ect. There are very few shows of any of the bands I listen to being taped in chicago. Hoping to start doing this before the Brookfield Zoo show on July 20th.
